Brussels is the wealthy capital of the Belgian kingdom. The huge market place in the centre is a baroque monument to the achievements of the 17th century. The Grand Place at the heart of the city is justifiably one of the finest squares in the world. This is the 'stomach of Brussels', home to many a great chef and also offers a Saturday flower market. No visit to Brussels is complete without a visit to the Mannekin Pis, a statue of a little boy urinating, which is said to embody the rebellious spirit of the burghers of Brussels.
Bruges, the capital of west Flanders province is the jewel in Belgium's crown. The Old Town with its network of canals is a superb example of late mediaeval urban architecture. The special charm of this historic town is clearly evident away from the principal tourist sights, in the quieter lanes and alleys, the green open spaces and alongside the many canals.
Not quite as unspoilt as Bruges, Ghent is both a major industrial city and an important cultural centre. After a tour of the magnificent Old Town, no visitor will fail to notice that Ghent has long since surpassed its old rival to the northwest.
Antwerp owes its prosperity to the modern port installation - one of the most efficient in the world. International trade has created an environment in which the arts thrive. From diamond houses to gothic churches, cobbled alleyways to peaceful parks, there is much to surprise and delight the visitor.
